Chapter 11
THE NEXT MORNING, Mendes leaves the house to do whatever he does every day.
“Ximen,” I cry out after I dismiss Cindi from my room.
In a blink of an eye, he’s standing before me, looking at me with his sky blue eyes.
I sit down on a chair, letting the folds of my gown spread over my legs. “How did the prince react to what happened yesterday?” I ask.
“The prince wrote a letter to Duke Sertan. He’s planning to make Lady Sonia his second wife,” Ximen says.
I nod. “When does he plan to marry Sonia?”
“By the end of next month.”
I tap my finger on the table and close my eyes as I try to remember when and how the prince had tried to usurp the throne. At this time in my last life, I was concentrating on pleasing my mother-in-law and didn’t pay much attention to what’s going on outside the walls of Mendes’s house.
I only remember hearing about the prince’s exile. That was after … Huntsmen’s Event.
I snap open my eyes. The end of next month is not soon enough. Huntsmen’s Event is just three weeks away.
“Pay people to fuel the gossip between Sonia and the prince,” I say. “Force the prince to marry Sonia before Huntsmen’s Event.” It’s a rush, but the wedding ceremonies for second wives are not as elaborate as the ones for real wives, especially if the bride is an illegitimate and the wedding was resulted from a scandal.
Ximen nods.
“Did you get any updates on what Mendes is up to?”
“He has been befriending some nobles.”
I lock my eyebrows together. Mendes doesn’t befriend people for no reason. “Keep a closer eye on him.”
“Sure.”
Ximen disappears from the room just as abruptly as he appeared. For a long time afterward, I stare at the wall to think over everything that has happened.
At this time last life, Mendes was studying for the civil examination coming up in the next few months. The exam was crucial to his path up the social ladder. Even if he’s confident that he’ll score better than the thousands of other scholars, I expected him to spend more time with the books instead of going out every day.
I think over Mendes’s actions since I first met him in this lifetime, and my head begins to hurt. His every move seems to serve a purpose, and his every gesture has a deeper meaning than the obvious. Now that he knows what is going to happen, his intentions are more mysterious than ever. When my head throbs, I give up on figuring him out. No matter what he plans, I have to best him in the end. Everything depends on it.
I stand up from the chair and push open the door. Cindi is outside, washing clothes in a wooden basin.
“My Lady.” She stands up from her stool when she sees me.
“I’m going home for a few hours,” I say.
“But Madame Marque—”
“She won’t ask my whereabouts today,” I reply. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t want me to talk about the birthmark on Mendes’s back.
